This Week’s Topic

It’s time for a game!  This week, we will be playing “The Good News Gone Bad Game!”.

How To Play The Good News Gone Bad Game

It’s easy…  bring in or find a news item while we’re together, and “break it” by changing one fact.  The break could be a little change or a huge one.  You will present your one to three sentence summary of the story.  Then we will try to figure out which fact is broken in 90 seconds, after you’re done presenting the news item.

Feel free to use any and all available resources to figure out the broken fact, including search engines, calling a friend, tarot, or whatever else you think might help. (If 90 seconds is too quick we’ll try two minutes, but I’m guessing that 90 seconds is enough time to either figure out the broken fact or realize it’s going to be really hard to figure it out.)

Along the way we’ll probably not be able to avoid talking about one or two of the stories, and that’s ok too!

Join us Tuesday at 12PM noon SL, and thanks for being part of “We Are The Network”.

Best regards,

Joel

2009-10-20 We Are The Network: “Economic Recovery… But What Is The New Normal?”

This Week’s Topic

Wall Street says that according to technical indicators the economic recession is over, and that we are in recovery, yet the jobless numbers continue to climb, and we all know that “things are not normal by any stretch of the imagination”.

What is going on with this recovery?  It seems that the nature of work is changing in front of us.  The kinds of companies that are becoming high fliers are in areas that didn’t exist just a few years ago.

What fallout have we not yet seen?  Current estimates suggest that job losses will continue to rise throughout 2010, and that housing prices aren’t at the bottom yet.

Where do we think the recovery is recovering “to”?  Will typical employment yield to task and project-based consulting?  The impact of the “instant communication globally networked society” is still being figured out, with multiple professions becoming unsustainable, and others appearing.  What will the new normal look like?

Join us Tuesday at 12PM noon SL, and thanks for being part of “We Are The Network”!

Best regards,

Joel

This Week’s Topic

Copyright, fair use and Digital Rights Management (DRM) have consistently been key issues as more content of all sorts is developed and distributed in digital form.  Digital works of all kinds run headlong into the tension between fair use and philosophies, strategies and technologies for how to control content use.  In this session we will explore the positions around fair use and digital rights management.  No doubt, the mere topic of this session will draw many comments from all sides, and potentially some fairly animated positions.  We will approach the topic from a global perspective, as this is one of those topics that reaches far past any one technology.

There are many perspectives and camps of interest involved with this topic area, and many “not so complete” answers.  Let’s dig in to discuss and attempt to better understand some of the key issues.

Please note:  The reading links provided are to provide some background, with the idea that any and everything presented in them is up for discussion and analysis.  Please do not assume any assumed intent or presumed conclusion by the links choices or the sequence, and feel free to bring your own references to the discussion as well.

See you Tuesday at 12PM noon SL, and thanks for being part of “We Are The Network”!

Best regards,

Joel

2009-09-22 We Are The Network: What Is Behind “The Public Civility Problem”?

This Week’s Topic

This week, as a result of several public incidents, the press seems to have discovered the meme collectively that we are losing our way in public discourse, and that the core issue is people not being civil to each other.

Is people not caring to be civil the core of this issue, or is rooted elsewhere, in the parenting style changes of the last decade or two, impact of large scale media behaviors, the political realities of today’s global interconnected culture, the recent financial problems, family structure changes, or some other cause?  Is this a new and growing phenomenon, or is the global net of communications exposing us to this issue in ways that we were not aware of previously?   If we trace the path back, what are the causes and drivers of these shifts? This Week’s Topic

This week we’ll be trying a wee bit of an experiment, an experiment I’m calling “News Slam”. News Slam is sort of a mashup of a poetry slam and a current events quiz show – with a twist.

What in the world is a News Slam, and why are we doing it?

Staying current with world events is always a challenge, given everything else we’re all trying to do in our lives. News Slam is a fun way to catch up with some things going on around the globe while maybe finding a topic we all want to dig into in a deeper way, either in this session or a future one.

I suppose we could even say that this is a serious game, enabled by a virtual world, but… that would be too serious – let’s have some fun and learn some new stuff!

News Slam How-To:
