This Week’s Topic

What Would You Do If The Omega 13 Was Real?

“In the far reaches of the galaxy, a civilization is under siege. They’ve searched the universe for a leader. What they got…were struggling TV actors.”  This gem of a movie has an interesting discussion topic hidden in it, but you’ll have to keep reading to get to it.

Maybe Galaxy Quest, the 1999 cultish movie send-up that relentlessly pokes fun at the Star Trek cast, show and fans, is not really in mind as “serious drama” or “serious film” or “serious anything” but it was a funny and surprisingly good movie. As they say in the infomercials, don’t take my word for it — see the Rotten Tomatoes review below — they gave it 89% and even said you don’t need to have Trekkie knowledge to enjoy it.

By now, you are probably thinking I’ve completely lost it…and…while you may be right, there is a real We Are The Network topic in here below the break.

nsea-galaxy-quest-protectorThe N.S.E.A. Protector, a space ship that has an almost starring role in the movie, has one very mysterious device on board. This device is called the “Omega 13.” It is so precious that aliens are willing to kill to get their hands on it, yet no one is quite sure what it does.  (From the Wikipedia article linked below) “According to fan speculation, the Omega 13 may either be a bomb capable of destroying the universe, or a device which re-arranges all matter in the universe to the state that it was 13 seconds before the device was activated, effectively acting as a time-machine which can send the user back thirteen seconds,” which as Captain Taggart said is “long enough for a chance to re-do one decision.”

What if you had the chance to change only one action or decision in your or someone else’s life, even something that perhaps might alter the course of history?  What would you do? Why would you do it? How would it change the world?

I suspect that, as Mister Spock from Star Trek would say, this discussion will be “fascinating.”

Join us Tuesday at 12PM noon SL, and thanks for being part of “We Are The Network”!

Best regards,

Joel
